Connaught Masters Open - Report
40’s – McCloughan’s Grit Wins the Day:
The 40’s division was packed with heavy hitters, but Pat McCloughan proved the steadiest hand of all. After navigating a tough semi-final, he outlasted Anthony Redmond in a tense five-set final, showing nerves of steel when it mattered most.
50’s – Chamilla in Total Control:
Igor Chamilla was the standout force of the 50’s — calm, precise, and ruthless. He swept through the draw without dropping a set in the closing stages, finishing with a commanding straight-sets win in the final to secure the championship in style.
60’s – Flanagan on Fire:
Des Flanagan tore through the knockout rounds with fearless attacking play, saving his best for the big moments. His semi-final ended in spectacular fashion with a tense 5th set decider going his way; and he carried that momentum straight into the final, outclassing Sean McAnaney 3–1 to lift the crown.
70’s – Caffrey’s Comeback Masterpiece:
Tommy Caffrey showed why he’s a legend in this age group. After cruising through the semis, he found himself 0–2 down in the final against Albert Coulter; but responded with three sets of pure class and composure, completing one of the tournament’s great turnarounds.
Ladies – Kacsandi Holds Her Nerve:
Rita Kacsandi dominated from the opening ball, storming into the final with authority. There, she was pushed to the brink by Susan Hanlon in a gripping five-set duel, but Kacsandi’s control under pressure saw her edge the decider and take the title.
